This month’s topic:

Physical Therapy and Movement

Presented by: Russ Hartophillis PT

Join us on February 19th in the CAR at 6:30 pm for an evening with our very own Russell Hartophilis. Russ has been a licensed physical therapist for 40 years. He earned his degree from Hunter College in Manhattan, New York. His career started in at Bellevue Hospital in Manhattan before moving into private practice. His specialities include musculoskeletal spine and extremity disorders as well as neuromuscular diagnosis. Upon relocating to River Bluffs, he now provides physical therapy home care services.

At this meeting we are going to be discussing pre-habilitation. This is a proactive exercise and education program designed to strengthen the body and improve the physical body prior to surgery.  By enhancing strength, mobility and cardiovascular health, prehab speeds up post operative recovery and may reduce complications. It also can decrease the need for inpatient rehab.

Americans live an average of 79 years but only 66 years of those years are spent in good health. This leaves 13 years with disease, disability and cognitive decline.

Our goal: Live well to 85-90! THEN have a quick decline. Not 20 years of being alive but not thriving.

How do we do that? One step is to incorporate exercise into your lifestyle. What does that look like? Exercise at a conversational pace. Exercise where you can talk but not sing - brisk walking, easy jogging, casual cycling, dance, or QiGong. The rule is 30-45 minutes 4-5 days per week.

It should feel sustainable - something you can do for 20 plus years. Why does this work? It rebuilds your mitochondria (our cellular power points).  People who do this have half the mortality risk of sedentary people.

As always, an important aspect of our Circle is the desire to pay it forward by collecting a small donation ($10 suggested) to support a local charity, which will be Nourish NC.

Please Note:  We are in cold and flu season. We do everything we can to make this a safe environment but ultimately it is up to each individual. Masks are optional and if you are not feeling well, please stay home.  We will also have air filtration units in place.  Please no perfumes.

Space is Limited, please RSVP by text to Kelly Good at 757-650-5787.
