From: Kelly Good

Our very own Rona Simmons will be our guest speaker for River Bluffs’ Wise Women on Thursday, February 20, 2025 at 6:30 in the CAR. (Room over the gym. Key fob required for entrance either through gym or side door) This event will be open to women and men. This is an RSVP event.

She will be discussing her latest book on World War II, titled No Average Day: The 24 Hours of October 24, 1944. It’s a groundbreaking work that tells the story of the single most deadly day in the war for Americans wherever they lived or served. No, not Pearl Harbor or D-Day or any day during the Battle of the Bulge, but a nearly unknown day late in the war. It’s not a story of the ground, sea, or air battles as much as a story of individual, “average” soldiers who fell in the line of duty, from the first at 3:00 am to the last at 11:30 pm.

Last month we talked about stepping into bigger shoes in our lives. This month, it will be stepping into a soldier or sailor or airman’s boots and gaining a better understanding of who they were, what they did, and how much we owe them.

Rona Simmons is an author of historical fiction and nonfiction. For the last several years she has focused her writing on World War II. Her latest work, No Average Day: The 24 Hours of October 24, 1944, was released by the University of Missouri Press’s American Military Experience series in October 2024.

Simmons’s motivation to write about World War II stems from her family’s connections with the military. She is the daughter of a World War II army air forces P-38 fighter pilot, the daughter-in-law of a bomber pilot with the Eighth Air Force’s 100th Bomb Group, and the wife of a former Vietnam-era US Navy pilot.

She is a frequent speaker to service groups, military organizations, veterans communities, and writers associations and she and her husband relocated from Georgia to Wilmington and River Bluffs in June 2024. We are thrilled to have Rona and Harry join our River Bluffs Community.

Please Note:  We are in cold and flu season. We do everything we can to make this a safe environment but ultimately it is up to each individual. Masks are optional but if you are not feeling well, please stay home.  We will also have air filtration units in place.  Please no perfumes or cologne .

One of the aspects of Wise Women is to pay it forward. Each month we collect a small donation to support a local charity. This month the donations received will go to the American Red Cross. We are asking for a donation of $10 per person. 100% of donations are given to the charity.

Learn to love your Best Life in River Bluffs as a community coming together to support one another.
