Subject: Phone Fraud Incident

Just a security warning! I thought this was worth sharing even though I was embarrassed for letting it go on so long and I lead the RB Medical and Security team. :-(.

I was called yesterday afternoon from what I thought was a New Hanover County sheriff saying that I was summoned for Jury Duty in October and I did not appear. Not remembering any summons but could have been overlooked I was shaken. They were directing me to stay on the line and not talk to anyone and that the judge issued a warrant and for me to go and post bond for $1400 then take the receipt to County Sheriff's office.

Although skeptical I was still concerned that this was something I overlooked. They then told me to go down to the ATM at Food-lion and post bond. Now even more skeptical I wasn't sure what to do. I told them I needed to discuss with my wife and they threaten me not to talk to anyone. However Sheila was recording the call on her phone. Eventually Sheila called the Sheriff's department and determined that it was a scam and as soon as I relayed, to the caller, that we contacted the sheriff they immediately hung up.

This is just a warning that these people can be very convincing if they catch you off guard. ALWAYS contact the agency in which they say they are representing and never send money electronically. Mark one up for the bad guys...they had me going for a bit. Also the Sheriff's office said they never contact people by phone in these matters. This would have been a little more challenging if someone hadn't been hear to assist me.

Be safe,
Greg
